You know the desk. A tower wedged underneath collecting dust, a nest of cables behind the monitor, and a power brick you daren't unplug in case something stops working. For most of us that tangle has simply been the price of having a computer at work. HP has quietly decided it doesn't have to be.
Meet the HP EliteBoard G1a - the world's first proper AI PC built entirely into a keyboard. Not a thin client, not a cut-down tablet in disguise: a full Windows 11 Pro business machine, roughly 12mm thin and about 750 grams, that sits on your desk looking like a premium keyboard and nothing more.
Inside the keyboard. That's the trick. HP has fitted a complete PC - processor, memory, storage, microphones and speakers - into the same footprint you already give a keyboard. To use it, you run a single cable to any monitor. That is the whole setup. No tower, no docking station bristling with adaptors, no cable spaghetti to hoover around.
Under the keys sits an AMD Ryzen AI 300 processor with a dedicated AI engine (NPU) rated at over 50 TOPS, up to 64GB of memory and up to a 2TB SSD. In plain terms: this is a genuinely powerful office workstation, not a compromise you accept for the sake of a tidy desk.
It's built for how offices actually work now. Hot-desking, shared workstations, people moving between meeting rooms - the EliteBoard makes a "desk" something you can carry. Pick up the keyboard, walk to any screen, plug in one cable, and you're at your own machine again. For agile teams and flexible offices, that is a genuinely different way of working.
On-device AI, not just cloud AI. That 50+ TOPS NPU means AI features - live captions, background-noise removal on calls, image and document tools, and Copilot - run locally on the machine. That's faster, works even when the connection is patchy, and keeps sensitive work on the device rather than shuttling it off to a server.
Security that's built in, not bolted on. The EliteBoard ships with HP Wolf Pro Security, HP's hardware-and-firmware-level protection. It can detect and self-heal BIOS attacks - the deep, below-the-operating-system threats that ordinary antivirus never sees - and HP has designed it to be ready for future quantum-computing attacks. For any business handling client data, that below-the-surface protection matters more than most people realise.
Fewer things to go wrong. One device instead of a tower, a dock and a rat's nest of leads means fewer points of failure, faster desk setups for new starters, and a workspace your team can actually keep clean.
If your people are largely deskbound running one big legacy application, a traditional workstation may still be the sensible choice. But if you're rethinking your office for hybrid and flexible working, refreshing an ageing fleet, or you simply want a cleaner, calmer and more modern workspace, the EliteBoard G1a is one of the most interesting things HP has made in years.
